3.9 How should animal samples or heads be transported?

Brain samples or heads should be transported using appropriate packaging to avoid potential rabies exposure. In many countries national and international regulations concerning the shipment of dangerous goods have to be followed.

In general, cold chains should be maintained while samples are transported for direct delivery to the laboratory without any delay. In fact, the ability to maintain the cold chain may determine the choice of sample transportation mode. If transportation is by mail, there should be sufficient cold buffering (e.g., ice, dry ice, insulating material to maintain cool temperature) to maintain the cold chain during transport.

Where cooling units are not available, at a minimum, exposure to undue heat should be prevented or preservative solutions should be used (e.g. glycerol saline or RNA later). FTA cards can be transported at room temperature (see here).
