5.9 What additional data can be collected to support rabies surveillance?

Regional data on animal bite statistics and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) may be a valuable add-on for epidemiological analysis and for fine-tuning or adjustments of implemented surveillance strategies in a given region. In any case, these data are useful for estimating the overall national burden of disease and make a strong case for political support to start implementing rabies control programs.

In addition, dog and wildlife population density estimates can provide important information to better analyze and interpret surveillance data (see section 2.1.9.).
